This is significant and valuable policy change, particularly because it includes free access to NYT archives from 1851 to 1922, and from 1987 to the present. The material covering 1923 to 1986 is a mix of free and fee-based.

Lori Northrup, head of the reference department, offers this suggestion:

Try a search in the archives from 1851 to 1980 on the Times' homepage: http://www.nytimes.com

Materials concerning Alabama from 1851, for instance, are available in .pdf format.

Some NYT materials will still require the use of microfilm, but this free online access will certainly be a time-saver for many of us.
