The Friends of the Hellenic Scholars’ Library at Samford University, have acquired the Eva C. Topping collection of books on Hellenic topics. Mrs. Topping, 91, of McLean and Fredericksburg, VA., passed away December 2011. Her books were given to the library in her memory by her brother, Steve Catafygiotu.
Mrs. Topping was a freelance writer, teacher, trained classicist, accomplished musician playing the violin, and published author. Her works include among others: Sacred Songs: Studies in Byzantine Hymnography and Holy Mothers of Orthodoxy.
Mrs. Topping graduated from James Monroe High School and Mary Washington College, and received her master's degree from Harvard, where she worked on a Ph.D. She received a Fulbright scholarship to Europe and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. While studying in Greece, she met her husband, professor Peter Topping.
The contribution of her collection to the Samford Hellenic Scholars’ Libarary will strengthen the modern Greek collection.
